How automation is used on this site, what it is not used for, and how it is supervised.

What is automated
News summaries labelled "News summary" are produced by an automated pipeline: approved feeds are fetched, items are deduplicated and classified, and a short summary is produced either from the publisher's own feed description or, when a summarisation service is configured, by a language model working only from that description. Each page states which method was used.
What is not automated
Original articles, opinion and research are written by the named contributor. Automation is not used to generate bylined articles, quotes, statistics or images presented as original reporting.
Safeguards
- Feed content is treated as untrusted data. It cannot change how the system behaves.
- Every automated summary must pass checks for length, language, relevance, spam and formatting before publication. Items that fail are held for an editor.
- Short or low-information summaries are excluded from search engine indexes until an editor improves them.
- Editors can pause any source, or all automation, at any time.
- Automated summaries never state facts that are not in the source description.
- Summaries are transient: each is removed automatically after 90 days, and earlier if the original article disappears from the publisher's site.
Errors
Automated summaries can be wrong. Please report errors; they are handled under the corrections policy.
